Should I choose weekly or bi-weekly mowing?
All lawns should be mowed on a weekly basis in the spring and fall when the weather is cooler and there is more precipitation. During the hot summer months of July and August, mowing on a bi-weekly basis may be appropriate. All properties with irrigation systems should be mowed on weekly basis. Ideally, only 1/3 of the grass blade should be cut during any mowing. When it is cool or the lawn is being watered, waiting more than one week allows for more than 1/3 of the grass blade to be cut and thatch buildup can occur.
Can I choose the day of the week you provide service?
NO. To keep costs down for our clients we design our routes efficiently, based on the locations of our clients. Most of our services are scheduled under this same approach.
How many times per year will my lawn be mowed?
Our residential properties are mowed approximately 26 times throughout the growing season. Mowing will typically start in early April and continue into early November. During the hot summer months in July and August service may be adjusted to a bi-weekly basis. Our foreman is trained to use their discretion and skip service as needed when they arrive at your property.
What height do you mow the lawn?
Mowing heights vary during the mowing season, depending on current weather conditions. Lawns are most healthy when mowed at 2 ½ to 3 ¼ inches. To prevent grass from matting over the winter, mowing height can be adjusted to 1 ½ to 2 inches on the last mowing of the season. Mowing at a lower height for the winter also helps to eliminate leaves from matting up in the grass.
Should I request to have the grass clippings bagged?
Grass clippings should not be bagged if the lawn is being mowed properly. Ideally only 1/3 of the grass blade should be cut during any mowing. Clippings contain nitrogen and other nutrients. When returned to the lawn, clippings recycle nutrients in an organic, slow-release form that promotes steady grass growth. Grass clippings break down quickly and also encourage the beneficial earthworms and microorganisms that maintain healthy grass and healthy soil.
How often do you sharpen your mower blades?
We sharpen our blades on average about every 12 to 15 working hours, so about ever 8-10 mowing hours 3 to 4 times per week.
Why don’t you offer aeration & overseeding in the spring/summer?
We prefer not to do any type of seeding in the spring/summer. You will have some initial growth if you seed in the spring, but the grass roots are not able to grow deep enough to survive the summer heat and usual drought conditions. If an irrigation system is present, then seeding jobs can be successful if the proper amount of water is applied to the lawn on a weekly basis. Fall is the best time to seed.
I’m having an event or party, can you pay special attention at my property?
Please let us know 7-10 days ahead and we will provide weekly service the day before your party. With 14 days notification we can also provide a detail crew service, mulch, pruning and seasonal color so that your property will look its best before your big day!

Do you provide shrub pruning?
Yes, we do. It is one of the most sought after services that we offer at JFK as we hand prune. Full time clients can sign up with their yearly agreement. All new customers are welcome to contact us too.
When and how should my shrubs be pruned?
The following is a basic guideline for pruning. When present, damaged or diseased shrub-limbs and branches should be removed. Most flowering shrubs and ornamental trees, should be pruned after blooming and before the next year's buds set. Prune whenever possible for plant health and to keep the natural shape of the plant. Some ornamentals and vines require dormant pruning in late winter. We highly recommend hand pruning over shearing.
Why should I have mulch on my property?
Mulch provides the following benefits for planting when done correctly: For shrubs and ornamental trees, a mulch base of 3"-4" is recommended. It helps to keep weeds in check, retains moisture in the soil and adds organic matter to the soil as it decays. Woody, ornamental and evergreen trees do not need or want their soil cultivated around their roots.
How about mulching annuals or perennials?
Mulch should be limited to 1"-2". Ideally a mulch compost mix would be a better choice. Unlike ornamentals, annuals and perennials like loose, tillable soil, so too much is not good.
