How Long to Wait Between Power Washing and Staining

power washing

After power washing your deck, you’ll need to give it enough time to dry completely before staining.

On our last post we talked about the dangers of power washing on your own, and how being unfamiliar with the equipment and techniques can lead to serious damage to your house. Hopefully you heeded our advice and hired a professional to come out and clean your deck and house. Now that your deck is nice and clean, you might be thinking about putting a fresh coat of wood stain on before fall gets here.

Why to Stain

Wood stain acts as a protective layer for your deck by keeping moisture out. Staining and restaining your deck when necessary will help prolong the life of your deck and keep it looking good. When a deck is power washed the top layers of the stain are removed along with any built up dirt and grime. Restaining is needed to bring that protection back to your deck.

How Long to Wait

After a deck has been power washed it will have some retained moisture within the wood. It’s important to let the wood dry thoroughly so none of the water that soaked into the wood gets trapped under the stain. In perfect drying conditions, 48 hours is enough for the wood to get to where it needs to be before staining. Decks that don’t get much sun should be given an extra day to dry out. If after a day or two the wood still looks wet or there are soft spots, give it more time to dry out.
