May and June are all about planting here at JFK Lawn & Landscape, and as such, we’ll be focusing a lot of our blogs over the next month and a half on various planting and gardening tips, from preparation to planting to maintenance. We’re starting off today with the down and dirty basics — preparing garden soil to be a good home to all the beautiful plants that will be gracing your landscape before you know it.
Uncovering the Dirty Truth
Preparing garden soil is one of the most crucial parts of gardening and landscaping, but it’s also one of the most commonly overlook by the casual gardener. Luckily the expert staff at JFK are a few tiers above “casual gardener.” When it comes to healthy garden soil, it’s a matter of finding the right balance of nutrients, aeration, moisture, pH, and even living organisms. That’s right — soil is alive, full of bacteria and other living things to keep plants happy and healthy.
To determine soil health, there are tests that can be done to determine what’s present and what’s lacking. While aeration and moisture content are generally observable to the trained eye, testing for pH and essential elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium must be done with a chemical analysis. Different plants can require different living conditions, so it’s best to know what you want to plant before you even pick up a trowel. (Stay tuned to our blog in coming weeks for more on choosing the right plants for your yard!)
